Errázuriz Aconcagua Costa "Las Pizarras" Pinot Noir 2014

<p class="ds-markdown-paragraph">This wine is the direct result of that coastal exploration and a decade of meticulous study.</p> <ul> <li> <p class="ds-markdown-paragraph"><strong>The Name &amp; Philosophy:</strong>&nbsp;<strong>"Las Pizarras"</strong>&nbsp;means "the slates." The wine is named for the&nbsp;<strong>dominant, mineral-rich slate (<em>pizarra</em>) and schist soils</strong>&nbsp;found in its specific vineyard blocks. The philosophy is one of&nbsp;<strong>extreme terroir expression</strong>: to craft a wine where this stony minerality is the defining character, not just a component.</p> </li> <li> <p class="ds-markdown-paragraph"><strong>The Vineyard:</strong>&nbsp;Located&nbsp;<strong>12 km from the cold Pacific Ocean</strong>&nbsp;at 200-300m altitude, the Aconcagua Costa vineyard is immersed in a&nbsp;<strong>strong coastal climate</strong>. Persistent morning fog (<em>camanchaca</em>) and cool afternoon breezes create one of Chile's coolest growing regions, allowing for a very long, slow ripening season&mdash;ideal for aromatic complexity and natural acidity in Pinot Noir.</p> </li> <li> <p class="ds-markdown-paragraph"><strong>The Winegrowing:</strong>&nbsp;The 8.8-hectare "Las Pizarras" Pinot Noir plot is farmed with obsessive precision. Yields are extremely low. Harvest is done in multiple passes to pick each cluster at perfect ripeness.</p> </li> <li> <p class="ds-markdown-paragraph"><strong>The Winemaking:</strong>&nbsp;Led by Chief Winemaker&nbsp;<strong>Francisco Baettig</strong>&nbsp;and Technical Director&nbsp;<strong>Tom&aacute;s Mu&ntilde;oz</strong>, the approach is minimalist. It utilizes native yeast fermentation, a&nbsp;<strong>high proportion of whole clusters (40-70%)</strong>&nbsp;for structure and spice, and aging in&nbsp;<strong>large, neutral oak foudres and used barrels</strong>. The goal is to translate the purity of the site directly into the bottle, with no winery artifact.</p> </li> <li> <p class="ds-markdown-paragraph"><strong>Debut &amp; Significance:</strong>&nbsp;The first commercial vintage was&nbsp;<strong>2016</strong>, released to immediate global acclaim. This new 2014 Aconcagua Costa "Las Pizarras" Pinot Noir is a selection of the best lots of Pinot Noir, grown on slate soils (pizarra is the Spanish word for slate) in the coastal part of the Aconcagua Valley, from their Manzanar estate vineyards. Winemaker Francisco Baettig used 20% full clusters for the fermentation in open-top fermenters and then aged the wine in French barriques, half of which were new, for 14 months. For such a young wine, there are very complex aromas that already point at notes of forest floor, mushrooms, truffles and game, not only wild berries and spices; it is subtle, fine and layered in a way that made me think of a wine from René Engel. There are some notes of rusty iron, blood and earth, and an absolute absence of balsamic aromas or notes of wood. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity and tannins, but with plenty of grip. Most would place this in the Côte de Nuits. Do not confuse it with the already existing "regular" Pinot Noir Aconcagua Costa. 4,000 bottles were filled in July 2015. - (Wine Advocate)
