<p>Belondrade y Lurton, founded in 1994 by Bordeaux's Bertrand Lurton, revolutionized Rueda by proving its native Verdejo grape could produce world-class, age-worthy whites. Rejecting the region's standard fresh style, it pioneers a Burgundian approach. Sourced from old vines on gravelly soils, the wine is whole-bunch pressed, then fermented and aged in French oak. This process creates a complex, structured white with notes of stone fruit, beeswax, and flinty minerality. It is the iconic benchmark for premium, barrel-fermented Verdejo, offering remarkable depth and longevity that redefined the potential of Spanish white wine.</p>

The 2005 Verdejo is a deluxe, French oak-aged Verdejo. Medium straw-colored, the oak is decently integrated but the wine is straightforward and monochromatic. It has good depth and concentration but is no better than a number of its unoaked peers at a fraction of the price. (Wine Advocate)
